The joint conference of GEM-STONES and GEM PhD Schools on "Standing Their Ground Against All Odds? Globalisation, Europe and Multilateralism in the Face of Mounting Assaults on the International Liberal Order" saw the doctoral researchers, Consortium members and GEM PhD School alumni come together for a variety of management, training and outreach activities.

A public panel took place on the first day of the conference, seeking to foster insights into how today’s international liberal order is fairing, with a particular concern for global and regional governance institutions, such as the EU.

PRESENT AND FUTURE OF MULTILATERAL GOVERNANCE AND THE ROLE OF THE EU

On the second day of the conference,  parallel Salons were organised on “Globalisation, Europe and Multilateralism: Threats to the International Liberal Order”. Participants included senior academics, policy makers, experts and EU-funded doctoral researches. Topics of the Salons included:

 

  • Salon 1 – Threats to Democracy (Host: Dr. Rosa Balfour, German Marshall Fund of the United States)
  • Salon 2 – Threats to Justice (Host: Ms. Shada Islam, Friends of Europe)
  • Salon 3 – Threats to Security (Host: Dr. Alexander Mattelaer, Egmont Institute)
  • Salon 4 – Threats to Sustainable and Inclusive Societies (Host: Mr. László Andor, ULB & Hertie School of Governance)
  • Salon 5 – Threats to the Trade System (Prof. Mario Telò, ULB-IEE & LUISS Guido Carli di Roma)
