GEM-STONES (Globalisation, Europe and Multilateralism - Sophistication of the Transnational Order, Networks and European Strategies) is an integrated research and PhD fellowship programme involving 8 degree awarding partner universities, 6 non-academic internship destinations and a publishing house. Its common research agenda is rooted in the shared observation that the proliferation of international institutions increases the complexity of the global system; managing the latter efficiently and fairly constitutes both a necessity and a challenge for the European union (EU).

In response to this shared observation, the 15 hired Early Stage Researchers (PhD fellows), their co-supervisors and non-academic mentors will collectively investigate 4 dimensions of the EU's capacity:

RESEARCH PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

How does the EU contribute towards the purposeful management of complex regimes ?

Emerald

EU’s ‘institutional capacity’ to externalise its policies

Citrine

EU’s ‘networked capacity’ to ensure greater policy coherence

Rubies

EU’s ‘relative capacity’ compared to other regional organisations

Sapphire

EU’s ‘framing capacity’ to define appropriate behaviors

In a nutshell, all doctoral and senior researchers involved in GEM-STONES will seek to find an answer to the question: Does the growing complexity of the global system strenghthen or weaken the EU's capacity to interact with the world.

Anchoring its ambitious research agenda, GEM-STONES will also setup a transnational doctoral school offering: (1) joint methods' training; (2) summer schools; (3) database compilation exercises; (4) joint scientific publications with Routledge; and (5) a dedicated internship programme.

Finally GEM-STONES will also actively contribute to the internationalisation of research and higher education through the institutionalisation of joint doctorates. Concretely, each of the 15 hired Early Stage Researchers will be jointly supervised by a set of academics from 2 universities leading - upon completion - to the award of a double doctoral degree.

Overall, GEM-STONES will provide its research community with an environment that is:
